Jayne Barnes

Musical Director

Jayne has been involved in brass bands from a young age following in her grandfather's and parents' footsteps. She played in Jones & Crossland (Birmingham) and Hendon Championship Section Bands and later conducted Amersham Band. She plays orchestral trumpet and was Principal Trumpet at Hatfield Philharmonic, (now DeHavilland Philharmonic) for a number of years.

 

Jayne is busy as a freelance player, conductor and pianist. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Jayne followed a teaching career and has taught music in Barnet, North London for over 30 years, both as an instrumental teacher and as a classroom specialist. At the Music and Drama Education Awards 2024, Jayne was highly commended in the Francesca Hanley Inspiration Award. Jayne is currently Secondary Music Curriculum Adviser for BEAT (Barnet Education Arts Trust) and coordinates the A Level Music Consortium to ensure access to A level Music in Barnet schools. In April 2025, Jayne conducted Barnet Youth Orchestra in their gala concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

In October, 2024, Jayne and her husband Simon, moved to Manningtree in North Essex. She is delighted to be appointed Musical Director of the City of Colchester Band and looks forward to developing band musicianship and to creating diverse programmes for traditional, original and entertaining concerts
